This is our most-booked journey, and the one we recommend to nearly every first-time visitor. The structure is deliberate: arrive in Cusco, transfer immediately to the Sacred Valley at the gentler altitude of 2,800 m, build acclimatisation slowly, reach Machu Picchu on Day 3 fully prepared, and conclude with a measured day in Cusco that absorbs altitude after the fact. No tight connections, no exhausted dawns, no logistical strain.

Day 01Cusco arrival
Sacred Valley descent

Met on landing at Cusco airport by your driver and our concierge. Welcome coca tea, a luggage handover, and an immediate transfer down to the Sacred Valley. The descent matters — you drop 600 m to 2,800 m before settling, which dramatically eases acclimatisation. Lunch at Mil, the Mater Iniciativa restaurant above Moray. Afternoon at your selected lodge — Tambo del Inka, Sol y Luna, or Explora Valle Sagrado — for rest. Dinner in-lodge.

Day 02Maras, Moray,
and the salineras

A late morning start. Your private archaeologist guide collects you at the lodge and we travel up to Moray — the circular agricultural terraces that functioned as an Inca laboratory for crop adaptation. We have unusual access to a former site coordinator who explains the experimental hypothesis in the kind of detail group tours never reach. Lunch at a small private chacra in Maras village, prepared by the family of one of our long-time guides. Afternoon at the Salineras de Maras — the pre-Inca salt terraces still worked by 800 families — in private, with the head of the cooperative if his schedule allows. Return to the lodge for an early dinner.

Day 03Ollantaytambo,
then Machu Picchu

Morning at Ollantaytambo — the only Inca town still inhabited along its original urban plan, and the only place the Inca army won a major battle against the Spanish. Walk the upper temple complex, then through the village's still-flowing irrigation channels. Lunch in town. Mid-afternoon, board the Vistadome 360 panoramic train to Aguas Calientes. Transfer up to Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel or Sumaq, by your preference. Dinner under the cloud forest canopy.

Day 04Machu Picchu
at first light

We hold a first-entry slot for you on Circuit 2 — the most complete route through the citadel. Pre-dawn breakfast, the first bus up. You enter as the mist is still lifting off Huayna Picchu and walk the upper terraces while the rest of the morning's visitors are still queueing. Your private archaeologist reads the site as text: the alignment with solstices, the Sacred Plaza, the Temple of the Sun's astronomical function, the Royal Tomb. Around three hours inside. Brunch at the Sanctuary Lodge or back in Aguas Calientes. Vistadome return train to Ollantaytambo, private transfer to your Cusco hotel — Palacio del Inka or Belmond Monasterio — for the final night (not included; we book separately as part of a longer Peru itinerary).
